Public Health Nurses provide and coordinate advanced patientcare and provide detailed education to the public about many illnesses and health conditions. Minimum Qualifications Education – associate's degree required; bachelor's in nursing degree preferred Experience – Two (2) years' experience in the field of Public Health Nursing or documented Public Health education. Licenses & Certification - Current Registered Nurse license from Oklahoma Board of Nursing and CPR certification required. Knowledge & Skills – • Knowledge of acceptable standards of public health nursing practices, principle and theories. • Knowledge of age-appropriate patient teaching/counseling techniques. • Skills in public speaking to effectively communicate public health nursing concepts to individuals and groups in a culturally sensitive manner. • Ability to communicate and accept varied lifestyles, healing methods and practices. • Knowledge of safety and risk management concepts and standards • Ability to communicate and coordinate with healthcare professionals to ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures. • Skill in organizing multiple projects including planning, goal setting and prioritizing, in order to manage projects effectively. • Ability to work with others in a team environment and be an effective contributor in committee work. • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with health care professionals as well as the public, both orally and in writing. • Knowledge of privacy act and maintenance of confidentiality • Skill in use of computer and other office equipment • Knowledge of emergency management and emergency preparedness to work with and assist with emergency management protocols when needed. Public Health Nurses provide and coordinate advanced patient care and provide detailed education to the public about many illnesses and health conditions. Work Environment Work is performed in a variety of settings: homes, schools, health centers, community centers, and agencies. Work involves vehicle operation in isolated rural areas, on unimproved roads and in heavily congested traffic areas. There is possible exposure to infectious communicable disease, potentially hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials. Must be aware of all risks involved and be willing to take precautions as requested or required. Physical Demands Work driving a vehicle in all types of weather and on all types of roads. Must physically be able to walk, climb, and go over rough terrain and up and down stairs at homes, schools or community facilities. Incumbent must be able to lift at least fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics in lifting, carrying, bending, stretching, etc. in the delivery of PHN services. Essential Functions Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following: • Each Public Health Nurse will be responsible for meeting PHN responsibilities for a specific geographical area within the Muscogee (Creek) Nation jurisdiction. • Serving patients by visiting homes, determining patient and family needs, developing heath care plans, providing nursing services and treatments, and referring patients to other services as needed. • Providing health information and education on maternal/child health, prenatal/postpartum health, breastfeeding health, immunizations, emergency preparedness and other public health topics. • Safeguarding health of children by providing well child exams, participating in child health education and school health, providing group instruction for parents and conducting immunization education. • Perform and document physical, social and environmental assessments on patients and communities. • Provide tracking and follow up for communicable diseases, immunizations, public health outbreaks or concerns. • Conduct home visit for prenatal/postpartum/well-child/elderly or at-risk population upon referral. • Ability to work closely with Care Managers, Providers and other Interdisciplinary team members. • Coordinate services between private, city, county, state, tribal or other agencies to meet patient's health needs. • Completion of appropriate competencies to include but not limited to immunizations and vaccine management, emergency preparedness, well child exams, etc. • Ability to recognize and react to emergency situations. • Proficient use and documentation in electronic medical record. • Provide health education and screening in communities. Plan, coordinate and/or participate in health fairs and/or health conferences as required for your population. • Responsible for timely completion of reporting requirements. • Regular attendance is required. • Performs other duties as assigned.
