The Hazardous Materials Shipping and Receiving Specialist is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient handling of gas cylinders and other hazardous materials across the UTHealth campus. Key duties include receiving, inspecting, tracking, storing, transporting, and returning gas cylinders; maintaining accurate inventory records in the DeMurrage Tank Tracking database; ensuring proper labeling, documentation, and safety compliance; coordinating pickups and deliveries with suppliers; conducting inspections and supporting audits; and operating a university vehicle. Position Summary: The Hazardous Materials Receiving Clerk plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient movement of hazardous goods in and out of the facility. This position requires strict adherence to regulatory guidelines, meticulous recordkeeping, and a proactive approach to safety and quality control. Position Key Accountabilities: • Receives, inspects, and verify hazardous material of gas cylinders shipments for accuracy, damage, and compliance with purchase order. Maintains an orderly flow of gas cylinders moving in and/or out of the warehouse and laboratory settings in various building across the UTHealth campus. Required to carry a University communication device as assigned and respond to calls during normal work hours. • Places a QR Code on received gas cylinders. Scans/tracks all receipts and returns of all gas cylinder inventory into the DeMurrage Tank Tracking database daily. Ensures a copy of all invoices is turned in to the Manager at the end of the workday. Checks daily emails for empty gas cylinders pickups per customer request and prepares them for return to the supplier. • Prepares outbound gas cylinders for loading, unloading, and transport of hazardous materials (e.g., gas cylinder tanks for medical research and patient care), including proper packaging, labeling, and documentation in accordance with safety standards and governmental regulations. Transporting of gas cylinders must be properly chained. Transports all gas cylinders to the appropriate location and verifies that all gas cylinders are left in an area approved by Environmental Health Safety UTHealth Safety. • Ensures gas cylinders are properly chained at all times, and that proper segregation, storage, and containment of gas cylinders to prevent safety hazards. Arranges gas cylinder tanks to provide for accessibility, ready identification, and proper distribution. Conducts routine inspections of storage areas, gas cylinders, and safety equipment. Participates in safety training and drills to maintain readiness. • Coordinates with suppliers to schedule pickups and deliveries, ensuring timely and secure transport. • Assists in monthly and annual audits of gas cylinders. • Operates and maintains a University vehicle and ensures that all maintenance is completed and logged. • Performs other duties as assigned. Certification/Skills: • Ability to work well cross-functionally • Excellent organizational skills. • Proficient Microsoft Office and Computer skills. • Excellent customer service skills displays a professional can-do attitude. • Ability to lift up to 60lbs and is able to squat, bend, stoop, push, kneel and reach • Ability to carry between 25-150 lbs. • Work may involve handling biohazardous, chemical, and radiological materials, as well as operating associated equipment. Required safety training and appropriate engineering and administrative controls including the use of personal protective equipment must be followed. • Driver License (DL) by State of Texas required Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required Minimum Experience: 2 years of directly related experience required Physical Requirements: Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
