Military experience equivalency may substitute for some requirements. The Master has overriding authority and control on board his/her vessel at all times either at sea or in port. He/she is directly responsible for all actions and procedures occurring on board that may affect the interests of the Company. Responsibilities/Job Duties • Oversee crew to ensure safe, reliable, environmentally conscious, and efficient operations • Steer and operate vessel utilizing radios, depth finders, radars, lights, buoys, or lighthouses • Dock and undock vessel maneuvering through narrow spaces • Communicate among crew members during highly stressful situations • Performance of inspection of all equipment and systems necessary for safe operations • The Master will supervise each department on board the vessel and be responsible for the economic maintenance and operation of the vessel, including authorization of overtime expenditures for all departments, cargo and ballasting operations oversight and tracking of vessel certificates. • The Master is to notify the Company of any cases affecting the seaworthiness of the vessel, safety of the vessel and crew, quality of the environment as affected by the vessel, security of the vessel, and quality of service provided to the Customer. • The Master is ultimately responsible for following all regulations and procedures under which the vessel trades, including but not limited to: Flag State, Class, Port State, the Company HSSEQ Management System • The Master is considered an extension of the Company and an integral member of the management team. As such, he or she is responsible for the training and evaluation of the crew under his or her leadership. Besides the responsibilities listed above, the Master is responsible for cost management, vessel maintenance, upkeep, and cleanliness, safety awareness and indoctrination, effective communication and harmony on the ship, and appearance and sobriety. • The Master is responsible for ensuring that all members of the crew are on board the vessel during regular or assigned working hours, whether the ship is in port or at sea. At no time in port should the officers of an entire department be away from the vessel. Masters must receive permission from the Marine Superintendent to be gone for over 12 hours from the vessel while in port. Requirements/Qualifications • USCG Merchant Mariner Credential international and national endorsements capable of foreign voyages. Note: Submit a copy of your current MMC with your online application. • USCG Merchant Mariner Credential international and national endorsements: • Must hold the following International STCW Endorsements: OICNW (STCW II/1 or II/2, II/3), Proficiency in the use of survival craft (PSC) (STCW VI/2), GMDSS (STCW IV/2) is preferred, Adv Fire Fighting (STCW VI/3), First Aid and Medical Care (STCW VI/4), Vessel Security Officer (STCW VI/5). • Must hold the following National Endorsements: Master 1,000 GRT upon Oceans or higher, Master Towing upon Oceans, Tankerman PIC (Barge) Dangerous Liquid Cargoes preferred • Must hold a valid USCG/STCW medical certificate. • Must hold a valid TWIC card and U.S. Passport Education/Experience • Maritime Academy graduate preferred • Five years of experience as petroleum ATB Master or other tank vessel experience preferred • ABS Nautical Systems NS5 experience preferred Physical Requirements • Able to work in confined spaces, carrying heavy tools, climbing and descending ladders, consistently asked to lift and carry loads at least 40 pounds • Must have current USCG STCW Medical Certificate, renewed every 2 years A complete job description is available upon request. Operate a bucket near energized lines to remove branches and tree material. • Plans, coordinates, and assigns daily work for crew after receiving/interpreting orders from a General Foreperson/Line Clearance Supervisor. • Conducts field training/retraining, instructing crew on new or revised job units. • Enforces safe work practices, as experience, judgment, company policy, and OSHA specifies and conducts safety training in accordance with company policies and procedures. • Discusses with property owner/customer(s) issues such as obtaining access, power interruption, work to be done; refers controversial cases to the General Foreperson. • Obtains oral or written permission from property owners to perform required work. • Promotes and maintains good customer and public relations through effective completion of assigned work and the appropriate behavior of employees on the crew. • May be delegated the authority to investigate incident reports, damage claims, etc., and to settle minor damage claims. • Maintains accurate records, timesheets and reports related to the performance of the crew operation. • Furnishes General Foreperson and utility representative with reports of orders completed, units of work completed, crew time, minor damage repairs and distribution, etc. • Periodically furnishes reports on incidents, truck breakdowns, private property damage, new employee follow –up, etc. • Cooperates with customers, police, and fire departments when blocking streets or driveways. • Safeguards employees and the public from hazards in and around the work area. • Perform tree and bucket rescue. • Sets up barriers, warning signs, flags, markers, etc., to protect employees and safeguard the public from hazards. In emergency situations, determines action to be taken to eliminate hazards to life and property. • Inspects and makes or provides necessary repairs to tools, trucks, and other equipment. • Maintains good housekeeping on truck and at work location. • Responsible for DOT maintenance and inspection requirements on all required vehicles. • Keeps informed regarding new equipment, specifications, standard practices, operating procedures, and customer and company employee relations policies and practices, including EEO and AA policies. Requests repair or replacement, when necessary. • Performs other related work as assigned by superiors. Minimum Qualifications: • Requires the understanding of drawings and symbols representing lines, voltages, line equipment, etc. • Have the knowledge to identify tree and shrub species. • Must be able to walk, climb, and work from ladders, or at various heights, on uneven and slippery surfaces, performing mentally/physically demanding work under unfavorable weather conditions while handling equipment or material. • Must have excellent communication and leadership skills. • Must have organizational skills and be able to multi-task. • Must be capable of adjusting to field requirements and take independent action without close supervision. • Must be able to safely drive an approved company vehicle. • Must be able to work with hands above head for extended periods of time. • Due to the capacity of existing equipment, the weight of the employee should not exceed approximately 300 pounds. • Must have no fear of heights. • Willing and able to work long hours and overtime during emergencies, including holidays and weekends. Education & Experience: • Must be 18 years or older. • High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred. • 1+ year of related industry experience required. License & Certifications: • Valid Driver's License required. • Obtain Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of hire. • Ability to obtain Herbicide license when required.
